Sydney identification context
A photograph can help a catcher, but no online guide makes close approach safe. Zoom from behind glass or another secure position.
Pseudonaja textilis
Colour can vary from pale tan through darker brown, grey or patterned juveniles. Open and modified landscapes across Western Sydney can provide suitable habitat; “brown” is not a reliable identification by itself.
Pseudechis porphyriacus
Often associated with creeks, wetlands, frogs and damp corridors. The red or pink underside may be hard to see from above, so a dark snake near water should still be treated as unidentified.
Morelia spilota spilota
A large patterned python associated with Sydney’s treed and sandstone country. It may use roof spaces, decks and elevated shelter. Non-venomous does not mean safe to pick up; defensive bites are possible.
Demansia psammophis
A slender, fast-moving snake that occurs in open habitats and suburban areas. Its small build can lead people to assume it is harmless or juvenile; never handle it for a closer look.
Cacophis squamulosus
A small nocturnal species associated with damp shelter and sandstone country. This individual was photographed at Berowra—useful local context, but not permission to search leaf litter or lift objects.
